Cycling Hazards

Len, a keen cyclist, writes:
I was concerned to see that two hazards in the Bayswater Shire area were still there and the Shire had done nothing to ease the situation.
The first was an excavation on the cycle track between the Maylands Golf Club and the Police Academy, there were several fence pickets and some plastic barrier jutting out half a metre into the path.
Well it has been there for nearly 3 months now and my blood was boiling as I just hate to be ignored..
Today I had a call from someone in the Shire who explained that the excavation had been done by the water authority and it was nothing to do with the shire. However I insisted that it was up to them to get it made safe so they are now urging the water people to get their workmen to fix the problem.
The other one was a chain across the road near the Eric Singleton bird reserve which we encountered at the end of King William Street.
I informed them that a reflective plate would stop cyclists and motorists from running into it.
When I inspected it last week the shire had hung two pieces of plastic tape from the chain and the ground was strewn with bits of motor car where someone had driven into it.
Once again I informed them and once again I had no answer so I saw red again and tried harder, this time I must have struck a nerve because I have had a call to say they will look at it again.
Far different is the response from Melville Shire, I emailed them last week about a re-occurring pot hole on the Esplanade in Mt. Pleasant. I had a reply from the engineers the next day to say they would look and fix it (band aid) and they have with a promise that the whole road is being upgrading in November.
I did point out that they have now put in squeeze points by adding islands and wider pavements but the guy said he didn't design the improvements which were done to slow the traffic down.
I know the cycle path along there has been improved but the volume of walkers makes it impossible to cycle along it.
And so the battle goes on as normal.

G'day

I understand Len's frustration. City of Stirling and the City of Joondalup's responses to hazard reports leave a lot to be desired.

On the other hand the City of Fremantle is very responsive, which is great. Sadly there latest response in respect of two cut out sections of shared path along Tydeman Street, North Fremantle leave a lot to be desired. With one they have put a barrier which pretty much effectively blocks the path, pushing cyclists towards and possibly onto a busy road and the other section remains exposed.

All that said that BTWA has also been a poor respondent as well. I have personally given up reporting hazards to the BTWA as they get ignored. Not even the courtesy of a response.

Andrew
